NRM CEC UPDATES!! List Of Winners And Losers

National Resistance Movement (NRM) Delegates Conference is currently unfolding at the Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, drawing party members and leaders from across the country for a highly anticipated political gathering.

The event, which kicked off on August 18 and is scheduled to run until August 28, is aimed at electing new leadership to guide the ruling party into its next term. As part of the program, key elections are being held to fill influential positions within the party’s hierarchy — though not without controversy.

Among the early developments, President Yoweri Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni made a notable appearance at the venue, underscoring the importance of the event on the national political calendar.

Several winners in different categories have already been announced. One of the significant victories came for former government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo, who was elected the NRM flagbearer for Member of Parliament representing Older Persons in the Eastern Region. Opondo triumphed over Dominic Gidudu Mafabi, the incumbent and current Minister of State for the Elderly.

However, not all outcomes have been smooth. In a surprising upset, Security Minister Gen. Jim Muhwezi, who also serves as the Rukungiri NRM Chairperson, lost his bid for the Central Executive Committee (CEC) position of National Chairperson for the Veterans League. The seat was claimed by retired Lt. Moses Mushabe, sending ripples through party ranks.

More controversy erupted when President Museveni intervened to suspend the elections for the NRM Entrepreneurs League. The suspension came amid what party officials described as “deepening disputes” and serious allegations of bribery and vote-rigging. At the center of the storm were two prominent businessmen — Hassan Basajjabalaba and Ceasar Mulenga — whose fierce rivalry drew accusations of electoral malpractice.

“Party officials said the suspension followed deepening disputes and corruption complaints,” an insider revealed, adding to the growing concerns about transparency within the party’s electoral process.

As tensions grew, former Tororo Municipality MP Sanjay Tanna made headlines after abruptly withdrawing from the race. He pointed to an increasingly “toxic environment” as the reason behind his decision.

“We realised that many delegates who were supposed to vote for us were missing from their constituencies. Some were herded out of the country and others locked up in hotels. To avoid tearing apart the party, I have chosen to step aside,” Tanna told reporters.

Tanna’s withdrawal came shortly after Mbarara City North MP Mwesigwa Rukaari, the outgoing chairperson of the Entrepreneurs League, also opted not to seek re-election. Rukaari said he would now shift focus to retaining his parliamentary seat, this time as an independent candidate.

In another surprise move, President Museveni’s brother, Nowomugisha Sedrack Nzaire, bowed out of the race for NRM National Vice Chairperson for Western Uganda. His withdrawal added yet another twist to an already unpredictable conference.

As the Delegates Conference continues, observers and party loyalists alike remain glued to the unfolding drama, waiting to see how these developments will shape the future leadership of the NRM — and perhaps, Uganda’s political direction as a whole.
