RIP!! Al-Shabaab Attack On UPDF Leaves Ugandans Mourning – Over 20 UPDF Soldiers Killed – 40 Injured
At least 20 Ugandan soldiers are feared dead and over 30 others wounded following a deadly ambush by Al-Shabaab militants in Barire, a strategic town southwest of Mogadishu, Somalia.
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), operating under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), had been advancing on the town for weeks in a joint operation supported by U.S. and Turkish drone strikes.
According to media reports from Somalia and a statement released by the Al-Qaeda-linked group on Friday, August 2, the militants ambushed the Ugandan troops shortly after they entered Barire, destroying five armoured vehicles in a fierce clash that lasted several hours.
The attack reportedly forced the peacekeepers to retreat amid heavy losses.
Independent observers, including the Military Observer open-source intelligence account, have reported similar casualty figures and confirmed the destruction of military equipment, lending some credibility to the insurgents’ claims.
However, neither ATMIS nor Somali government officials have issued an official statement.
Barire, which fell to Al-Shabaab in March, is seen as a critical link between Mogadishu and southern Somalia.
Military analysts warn that unless towns like Barire, Sabiid, and Awdhegle are secured, Mogadishu could face increased threats from militant advances.
