Why Kanyeihamba Will Be Buried In Kampala And Not His Ancestral Home In Kigezi

The official funeral program for retired Supreme Court Judge Prof. George W. Kanyeihamba reveals that he will be laid to rest at his residence in Buziga, Kampala, rather than his ancestral home in Kigezi, Rubanda District.

The decision, surprising to many who knew his deep love for Kigezi, stems from personal reasons rooted in his friendship with the Kabaka of Buganda.

The funeral arrangements begin on Wednesday with a eulogy session at the Supreme Court in Kampala at 2 p.m. On Friday, a vigil will be held at his Buziga residence, lasting the whole day. A memorial service will follow on Monday at All Saints Church, Nakasero, starting at 9 a.m.

The main tribute will be held Tuesday at Kabojja School grounds from 10 a.m., culminating in burial at his Buziga home. Though the residence occupies less than half an acre, it holds deep personal significance to the late jurist.

Kanyeihamba often spoke of his strong bond with Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, revealing that the Buziga land was a personal gift from the monarch. In honour of that friendship, he insisted on being buried there.

He had also expressed a wish that the land never be sold, believing his burial there would prevent future generations from selling it.

His connection with the Kabaka extended beyond land; he frequently visited him, especially after overseas medical trips.

This decision underscores Kanyeihamba’s enduring loyalty and gratitude to the Kabaka. It was, he believed, a final act of respect.
