“We Are Not Afraid Of Him” Uganda Human Rights Chief Mariam Wangadya Unbothered by Gen Muhoozi’s Strong Response
Mariam Wangadya, Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), has reaffirmed her commitment to human rights advocacy despite facing sharp criticism from General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces, following her call for the release of Eddie Mutwe, the bodyguard of opposition leader Bobi Wine.
Wangadya had addressed a formal appeal to General Muhoozi, urging the immediate release of Mutwe, whom she described as being held in violation of constitutional procedures. She emphasized that every detainee is entitled to legal protections and due process, condemning Mutwe’s detention as unlawful.
In response, General Muhoozi issued a pointed statement rejecting her appeal and questioning her authority to interfere in military matters.
However, Wangadya remained resolute. She insisted that her role as UHRC chairperson compels her to speak out against any form of rights abuse, regardless of the rank or position of those involved.
“No one is exempt from the law,” she stated. “Our role is to challenge rights violations wherever they occur, and that responsibility cannot be compromised.”
She also dismissed any attempts at intimidation, saying neither she nor the commission will be silenced by powerful figures. “We will not hesitate to expose injustice. It’s our duty, and we intend to carry it out fully,” she declared.
Her position has drawn widespread praise from human rights groups, who commended her bravery and reaffirmed the necessity of defending citizens’ rights across the political spectrum.
Eddie Mutwe, a frequent target of state arrests due to his close ties with government critic Bobi Wine, was recently detained once again—triggering public outrage and prompting the UHRC to intervene.
